Part II

THE PATH INTO THE LIGHT

CHAPTER 5

Steppingstones: The Building of

Relationship

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” If a single maxim could guide us as we begin to build healthier relationships, surely Socrates’ dictum would hold the greatest promise. Part I of this book shed light on the power of the family and its effect on a child’s experience. Now you can use the deeper self-understanding you have gained to help you examine the myriad ways in which your past is holding you captive in the present.

Understanding one’s past is merely a first step, of course. The real work required to break the spell of the enchanted forest of self-deception and limitation is still ahead. Part II provides some of the tools and raw materials of relationship building you will need on this very personal journey. It is meant to help you question formerly unchallenged or unexamined assumptions you may hold about relationships. That they may have had their origins in dysfunctional modeling is not the only reason why long-held assumptions about love, commitment, and intimacy need to be reexamined. In this decade we are witnessing rapid and dramatic social changes and a shift in consciousness about how we can best relate to each other so that everyone gains, grows, and remains intact. Trying to meet contemporary relationship needs using our parents’ and grandparents’ yardstick is like trying to find one’s way in a new city suburb with a thirty five-year old map.
